To begin, create a quiet, tranquil space where you can escape external distractions and delve into your inner world. Engaging in practices like meditation can aid in calming your thoughts allowing for a deeper connection with your creative intuition.
Find a sound that relaxes you. I like to listen to "Sound Bowls" as a background to my meditation. Some people like a consistent sound that doesn't vary, i.e. the air conditioner. The background sound is helpful to block out other noises and helps to center your attention and focus.
Add intentional deep breathing. I start with 3 counts inhale and 4 counts exhale and continue for about 10 breaths. These initial steps of centering yourself not only sets the stage for a more profound creative process but also cultivates a harmonious balance between your thoughts and emotions.
Allow thoughts to pass through as if they were lightly moved aside by a soft breeze. Keep moving your focus to the quiet stillness within.
As you quiet the noise around you and within you, you pave the way for fresh ideas to emerge and innovative solutions to take shape. Keep opening, expanding and softening your consciousness.
Gently notice what you experience. You may feel physical sensations, hear an inner sound, see a vision in your mind's eye, or simply rest in the experience of stillness.
To begin with hold this space for 5 minutes. As you become more comfortable, extend the time to 10 minutes, then 20, and so on. Do what feels right for you, there is not a right or wrong way to experience your centering quiet moments. Embracing stillness and mindfulness at the outset of your creative endeavors can lead to a more authentic expression of your artistic vision, tapping into the wellspring of creativity that resides within you.
In the next post, we will talk about Focus on Feelings: Noticing how different colors, shapes, and patterns influence how you feel. Trust those feelings as they arise—they are your intuition’s way of communicating what your work needs.
